This week's livestream highlight is a 5+ hour B2B set I did with Micke while he was out here in Colorado on some MK2AM business. If you like big room melodic house and progressive like we used to do, you're going to LOVE this set. And why part two? Because when you include the downtempo I played before and after, the full stream was well over 9 hours. BEASTMODE.

The week isn't over yet, but I'm already going to call it, because this right here is one of the best progressive sets I've played in a long LONG time. A short week of streaming as I head back out to LA for the Bootycorn monthly, and I've chosen my first post-concussion melodic electronic show to share with you this time around.  My head was feeling well enough to play, but only barely, so the vibe of this one is much more smooth than what I usually do when I play big.

Had to unexpectedly take a few weeks off due to a pretty fantastic crash while skiing at Steamboat Springs with some friends. This mix represents my first take at exiting concussion protocol, which explains why it's so bottom-of-the-ocean chill.

The podcast! It's back! From here on out, I'll be using the pod to highlight one of the sets from my livestreams on Twitch (@DJAlexWhalen) and Mixcloud (@AlexWhalen). Right now I'm playing four or more times each week, with each set featuring a different style of melodic electronic. Although the complete archive for all these shows can be found on both SoundCloud and Mixcloud, those recordings include voiceovers and audience interaction, which some people REALLY don't want to hear overtop of their DJ sets. And that's why this pod now re-exists: to give those people someplace they can still get my mixes without any talking whatsoever! Tuesdays feature a two-hour downtempo set and a three+ hour big room melodic electronic session, with the length of the set varying depending on whether I have a guest and/or am doing some kind of showcase. Thursdays see me doing a two-hour liquid funk & fast soul (a.k.a. hyper-melodic drum & bass), followed by four hour chunk-a-funk house session with one or more of my brothers from the Bootycorn Sound System.   Back by popular demand, this one was made back in the summer of 2010 as a tribute to the sound that defined a DC generation. As I said back then…..includes past and future classics from Jay Lumen, Jamie Matrix, Way Out West, Space Manoeuvres, Max Graham, Orbital, Spooky, Lazonby, Faithless, Hoxton Whores....  

Why isn’t this mix named after a Star Wars planet? I honestly have no idea at this point, but I promise you that it made sense to me back in 1995!

The fifth and for now final installment of downtempo mixes pulled from the vaults, Kessel was recorded in 2002 within a month or two of Hoth. I think the track selection still confuses people sometimes.

Reposting this as part of my deep dive into the downtempo vaults, this one was the very first thing I ever recorded and gave out. Back when tapes were actually tapes and mixes were only ever done live, I made this one using three turntables, two CD players, one mixer, and one cassette recorder.

The third in what I think you can tell was a series, this was the B-side of the second mixtape I ever recorded back in 1995. Sound quality suffers a bit here and there as the original tape was damaged, but hopefully not so much that it takes away from your enjoyment of the mix.

While I’m digging in the vaults, I’ll just go ahead and post a few of these classic ambient and downtempo mixes for y’all. This is the B-side of the very first mixes I ever did, so it dates all the way back to 1994. Recorded live using a Vestax mixer, three 1200s, and two non-pitch-shifting CD players, because those hadn't even been invented yet.

By special request, I’m going back in time to repost a downtempo mix I made all the way back in 2002 while I was living in San Frandisco. I still think the Tatooine tape is my best downtempo work, but all y’all have always told me that no, this one is really the one, and who am I to judge? So by request, Hoth.
